Prospect Primary do the Double

This past weekend, Prospect Primary etched their school’s name in the annals of Primary Football League history as they joined an elite class of teams by winning the 2006/2007 CUC Primary Football League Closing Rally after securing the U-11 League Championship, only one week earlier. Following closely in the footsteps of their formidable adversaries John A. Cumber Primary who dominated the 2005/2206 CUC Primary Football League campaign, Prospect Primary shook off the effects of an early loss in the Rally’s group stage, to overcome a spirited Truth For Youth 2-0 in the finals.

Prospect Primary celebrates their Rally triumph.

It was not all smooth sailing for the newly crowned U-11 League Champions, finishing runners up in Zone A after outlasting Savannah Primary in penalties and losing 1-0 to eventual group winners Cayman International School. In the quarter finals, the boys from Prospect regrouped defeating Red Bay Primary 2-0 and triumphing over Triple C in a semi final penalty shootout to clinch a spot in the finals.

Their opponents and finalists for the first time, Truth For Youth, surprised everyone by grabbing second spot in Zone D with a penalty shootout victory over defending Rally champions John A. Cumber Primary and an unfortunate 2-0 loss to eventual Zone D winners Red Bay Primary. Quickly learning from their victory over John A. Cumber Primary, Truth For Youth disposed of U-11 League Runners up Cayman Prep in the quarter finals after another penalty shootout, and defeated a tough Cayman International School 1-0 in the semi finals.

Considering that the two finalists endured playing four games on the trot in the stifling heat, the final itself was an entertaining encounter matching the style and grace of Prospect Primary with the hard-nosed determination of Truth For Youth. A goal in either half secured the championship for Prospect Primary, but true to form, Truth For Youth did not concede defeat easily.

In the third place game, Cayman International School defeated a spirited Triple C team in penalties to secure their second trophy in a week after lifting the U-11 Consolation Cup last weekend. In reaching the third place game, Cayman International School topped Zone A after defeating Savannah Primary on penalties and shocking eventual champions Prospect Primary 1-0. Penalties seemed to be the name of the game on this day for Cayman International School as they outlasted St. Ignatius Prep on penalties in the quarter finals before losing 1-0 to eventual Rally runners up Truth For Youth in the semi finals.

Triple C’s journey to the third place game was filled with highs and lows. Surprisingly winning Zone C after a hard fought 1-0 victory over the Golden eagles of First Baptist, and a penalty shootout win over St. Ignatius Prep, the Crusaders defeated Grace Wesleyan 2-0 in the quarter finals before suffering a heart-wrenching semi final loss to Prospect Primary on penalties.

So ended the Closing Rally, and officially concluding the 2006/2007 CUC Primary Football League campaign. A truly remarkable season for Prospect Primary and their supporters. The question is… can you say ‘repeat’? Congratulations to the season’s champions, runners up and all the schools who participated in this successful campaign, leaving us with cherished memories of what football is supposed to be. To the senior players who move onto the U-13 League, we wish you well, and to those returning players, we anticipate an even greater 2007/2008 season. Thanks to the many parents and supporters who attended the games throughout the season and contributed greatly to making the CUC Primary Football League – ‘the powerful game!’
