Lottery charges withdrawn

Ina Bernella Ramos had lottery charges against her withdrawn on Thursday when she appeared in Summary Court.

She first came to court in January with two other women and three men. All six faced lottery-related charges arising from an incident at a George Town residence on 16 July 2006.

Ramos had been accused of permitting a place of which she was the owner to be used as a common gaming house; unlawful possession of lottery tickets and unlawful receiving of monies.

On Thursday, Acting Magistrate Valdis Foldats explained to two defendants who did not have attorneys that the charges were withdrawn against Ramos because her attorney had written to the Crown pointing out the weaknesses of the case against her.

He suggested that they might approach other attorneys in the case who were also making representations.

Crown Counsel Trevor Ward confirmed that he had made the ruling in Ramos’ case because there was no evidence to support the charges.

Ramos was represented by Attorney Ailsa Williamson.

The five remaining defendants were directed to return for mention of their matters again on 29 March.

No details of the various allegations have been given in court, but the charges are generally self-explanatory.

They include possession of lottery tickets and being present in a common gaming house. One man is accused of escaping a common gaming house on the occasion of it being entered by officers of the Royal Cayman Islands Police in the execution of their duties pursuant to the Gambling Law.
