Another druggies’ site cleared

A group of West Bay drug users will have to find a new roosting area.

The piece of property, 3,500 square feet in Foremast Close off Fountain Road, West Bay was cleared by the National Roads Authority Thursday morning.

The move came about after other residents and property owner Dury Rivers complained that drug users were gathering in the area and using the property to carry out illegal activities.

Constable Nettie Bulgin, beat officer for the area, said the vacant lot was being used for drug consumption and sales.

She said that after speaking to residents in the area she inspected the property, took pictures of the property littered with old beach chairs, cans used for smoking crack cocaine, partially smoked weed butts and other garbage.

She said she took residents’ requests to officials at National Roads Authority and to West Bay MLA Mr. Rolston Anglin. He requested the land be cleared.

‘This may not completely stop drug consumption in the area, but it is doing something to minimise the use of such properties and keep residents safe in the community,’ Ms Bulgin said.

At the site, NRA’s Superintendent John Edward Ebanks made sure that most of the indigenous trees on the property were not pushed down by the two bulldozers clearing the property.

During the clearing up of the property Mr. Anglin visited the site and spoke with NRA officials, Ms Bulgin, Mr. Ebanks and residents.
