Today’s Editorial March 13: Another drug site cleared

It is welcomed news that another site where illegal drug consumption and sales took place has been removed.

Once again the National Roads Authority, in conjunction with the Royal Cayman Islands Police Services, has identified and gotten rid of another West Bay hangout for druggies.

Too often overgrown lots, especially in West Bay, are being used for illegal purposes.

The offenders drag in their own rough and tumble furniture and drug paraphernalia and set up shop.

While they’re getting high and making illegal sales, neighbours worry about their own safety.

It was with the permission of the residents in proximity of Foremost Close off Fountain Road that the vegetation and garbage were cleared.

We applaud the effort to save indigenous trees during the cleanup but we respectfully ask if there’s another way to deal with druggies and their hangouts.

Where was the owner of the property? Why didn’t he or she see to it that the spit of land was already tidy instead of overgrown?

Not only are unkempt properties unsightly, they can also be a danger to the community as a whole.

In addition to crack and ganja smoking miscreants, there’s no telling what other kind of undesirable vermin slinked through the overgrown vegetation.

Unkempt lots are breeding grounds for rats and the like.

It’s a shame that the NRA had to be brought in once again to clear out vegetation and possibly endanger habitat for worthy creatures as well as indigenous trees and plants.

Let’s hope the owner of the land is contacted and stops ignoring his or her responsibility to that community, district and the country as a whole.

Last week we encouraged Government to take the suggestions of Bodden Town MLA Osbourne Bodden and consider legislation that would require home and landowners to keep their property clean.

Evidence that once again NRA had to be brought in to clear out a neglected property to stem the use of illegal drugs should give Mr. Osbourne and those who support his suggestion a little more ammunition in their battle.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: People who refuse to clean up their own property are a disgrace to the entire country of the Cayman Islands.
