Businesses get behind Special Olympics

Cayman27, the official fundraiser for Special Olympics Cayman Islands, along with Platinum Partners, Digicel and Maples & Calder and Gold Partner, Cayman National, recently presented a cheque for 60,000 to Special Olympics Cayman Islands.

The donation is part of an on-going fundraising effort coordinated by Cayman27 to support Cayman’s Special Olympics team as they embark on their journey to compete in one of the year’s largest global sporting events, the 2007 Special Olympic World Summer Games in Shanghai, China.

The cheque was presented by Shawn Wilcox, CITN/WestStar TV general sales manager; along with John Byrne, Digicel head of business solutions; Paul Lumsden, Maples & Calder partner; and Claudia Welds, Cayman National senior executive of Corporate Communications.

The presentation took place at the Special Olympics Cayman Islands One Mile Walk in Safehaven, part of a week-long programme of events to mark the official Week of Awareness for the Games.

‘For more than 10-years, Cayman27 has helped raise awareness and funds for the Cayman Islands Special Olympics and this year they stepped up their support to coordinate all of our fundraising efforts, allowing us to concentrate on training’ said Eric Crutchly from Special Olympics Cayman Islands. ‘We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Cayman27 along with Platinum Partners, Digicel and Maples & Calder; Silver Partner, Cayman National, and the many Silver and Bronze sponsors that have kindly supported us.’

The donation will provide traveling suits, airfares, visas and travel expenses for the team. Special Olympics Cayman Islands has also set-up a separate fund to provide full media coverage of the Games.

Four athletes, Andrew Smiley, Waide McLaughlin, Kevin Anglin and Chris Sampson, have been selected to represent the Cayman Islands in Shanghai. The athletes have been undergoing an intensive training regime that has not only helped them to prepare physically for the event but has developed a sense of camaraderie amongst the team. They will soon travel further from home than they have ever been, living out the athlete oath: let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt. Cayman27 Sports Anchor, Vanessa Hansen will travel with these brave athletes to follow their Special Olympic journey every step of the way and bring their inspiring stories back to Cayman.

‘I cannot begin to express how appreciative we at Cayman27 are to all the companies which have supported our fundraising efforts on behalf of Special Olympics Cayman Islands,’ said Shawn Wilcox. ‘On behalf of Cayman27 and all our generous supporters, I would like to commend Andrew, Waide, Kevin and Chris for qualifying for the 2007 Special Olympic World Summer Games in Shanghai and we wish them every success.’
