Merry the Turtle at the Cayman Turtle Farm at Boatswain’s Beach has been sponsored by BodMer Company Limited through the park’s Corporate Sponsorship Program.
Merry is one of the original breeders to the Cayman Turtle Farm in 1968 when the company was still Mariculture Ltd. She was captured from the wild in Guyana and raised on the farm, says a press release.
‘The turtle is sponsored in loving memory of Mrs. Veta Merren-Bodden who was one of the founding members of the Cayman Turtle Farm and also sat on the board of directors,’ the release notes. Mrs. Bodden’s daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Jerry Frazier, owners of BodMer, have now become life-long sponsors of Merry (derived from Merren) in tribute to her.
Cathy fondly remembers her mother taking her to Salt Creek, the original location of the farm, to visit the turtles.’
BodMer Company Limited is now the third corporation to enroll in the program; joining CUC and Grace Christian Academy.
Each sponsoring company is given the privilege of naming their turtle, as well as a hard copy document with all known details on the sponsored turtle. They also receive two free visits for special tours during the year, a certificate of recognition, a gift package and recognition on the Boatswain’s Beach website as a turtle conservationist.
All sponsorship funds are used for the research and upkeep of the animal as well as other supporting programs.
