Tropical Storm Felix enters Caribbean

Tropical Storm Felix was born when the surface winds of Tropical Depression Six reached 40mph early Saturday morning.

Felix entered the southeast Caribbean Sea after passing over or very near Grenada early in the morning.

The storm is entering an environment of low wind shear and high sea surface temperatures which are conducive to strengthening. NOAA’s National Hurricane Center in Miami predicts Felix will become a hurricane by Monday and a major Category 3 hurricane by Wednesday.

As of Saturday morning, Felix was moving westward about 18mph and the general motion is expected to continue for the next 24 hours.

On its current predicted path, Felix will pass well south of the Cayman Islands on its way to Central America. If Felix maintains the official track expected by NOAA, it will pass more than 200 miles south of Grand Cayman and make landfall in Belize.

However, some of the major computer models take Felix on a more northerly course and have it passing less than 100 miles south of Grand Cayman.
