The Digicel Chuggers used two big innings to defeat a determined Kirk Freeport team 15-9 on Monday to advance to the co-ed softball B-league Championship game.
After holding Kirk Freeport to two runs in the first inning, the Chuggers batted around in the bottom of the frame to take a 6-2 lead. Donnie House, Neil Clements, Alan Markoff and Sean Landreth all had key hits in the inning.
The teams each scored two runs in the second and then the Digicel bats went cold. Kirk Freeport scored two runs in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game at eight.
After the Chuggers defence tightened to deny Kirk Freeport any runs in the sixth, the Digicel offence alive again, keyed by a three-run home run by Donnie House and a solo shot by Neil Clements. Seven runs crossed the plate for the Chuggers that inning, giving them a commanding 15-8 lead going into the final frame.
Sue Clements 7-pitch base on balls played a key role in the Chuggers’ big 6th inning, as did Cara Elliott’s base hit.
Kirk Freeport scored a run in the seventh, but the Digicel defence slammed the door before the game could get any closer.
The Chuggers advance to Wednesday’s final, where they will play the winner of the LOM/Caybrew vs. CITCO game, played Tuesday night.
