Cable and Wireless Jet Around Cayman will have a totally new flavour for 2008, according to organisers.
Reps at Monster Media have called to fans of the annual jet ski race to prepare their hottest beach gear as JAC 2008 takes to the beach for an ‘MTV spring break-style’ production on Monday, 16 June.
‘The vibe this year on Public Beach for Jet Around Cayman will be nothing short of explosive,’ Kenny Rankin of Monster Media, who also owns and operates the radio stations that co-promote the event, said. ‘Between the obvious excitement of the jet ski race, there will be models, beach volleyball and then – of course – a fete featuring Bunji Garlin and DJ BabyYu.’
Hailed as a voice calling out in the wilderness on behalf of the common man, Bunji is one of the few artistes that have successfully bridged the generation gap as well as broken through the social strata, creating songs that explore and address a myriad of issues including crime, discrimination, prejudice, poverty, sexual deviation and political pandering. Of course, Bunji also explores the lighter side of living through his songs created just for dancing and romancing the ladies.
Bunji is on a roll in 2008 with several soca hits in high radio play. His 2008 hits include ‘Bad & Famous’, ‘Beep Beep’, ‘Jump and Blaze’, ‘Firey’ and ‘Mash Up’.
DJ BabyYu – who will also spin the official pre-party the night before at Seven Mile Beach’s hottest nightclub – will join Bunji on the beach for a soca and hip hop explosion of music. A prolific performance DJ and producer out of Canada, BabyYu is best known for his XM radio show on XM’s channel The City. BabyYu has created mix tapes for the likes of Kanye West, Fabolous, The Game and Ludacris. JAC reps state that BabyYu is the club performer of a lifetime and is going to set the beach on fire for Jet Around Cayman 2008.
‘We are especially excited about welcoming DJ BabyYu to the Jet Around Cayman family and to Vibe 98.9 FM,’ Mr. Rankin said. ‘His urban flavour and superstar affiliations are going to make him a permanent fixture of the annual event. He embodies what JAC and Vibe are: electric and very hot right now.’
Jet Around Cayman begins officially at 11am with the check-in of the riders. At that time, DJs form Vibe 98.9 FM will take to the stage to begin warming up the crowd for the afternoon. At 12pm, riders will be interviewed on stage in the Gatorade G2 Tent. At 1pm sharp, riders will make a staggered start for the race. The winner of the totally-unique endurance race is normally in at 10 to 15 minutes past 2 o’clock. Awards take place at 3pm.
At that time, the JAC Beach Fete will kick off featuring performances by Bunji, BabyYu and appearances by a host of guest soca superstars. Partygoers are encouraged to wear hot beach party wear and plan on being featured in both live video and event photography.
Bar service will be provided by Calico Jack’s and feature specials on Red Stripe.
According to organisers, Calico Jack’s will feature an ocean-side after party featuring three of the island’s biggest returning house music DJs to cap off the evening. (See a future edition of the Caymanian Compass for further details.)
‘This year for Jet Around Cayman, we are offering a completely fresh experience,’ Mr. Rankin added. ‘This will be a party in every sense of the word.’
