Little leaguers pulled off some surprises

The Cayman Islands’ Little League baseball teams have returned home after a large turn-out in the Disney international tournament in Florida.

Cayman were the Caribbean’s sole representatives and certainly did the islands proud against some of the best young teams from around the world – from the United States to Puerto Rico and even Saudi Arabia.

Fifty tiny Little Leaguers made the trip, along with 30 parents and sixteen coaches. All the teams put in the hard work for the tournament, training almost every day for five weeks and showing commendable tenacity and resolve.

Four teams went to represent Cayman, in the 16-and-under, 14-and-under, 12-and-under and 10-and-under age groups – making the club the best represented at the Disney tournament.

Each team played five games over the course of eight days and although the players sometimes found it tough against experienced teams, they showed remarkable determination and team spirit.

The under-10 side pulled off the most stunning result of the trip with a 12-1 demolition of Saudi Arabia in their final game.

The trip showed that youth development of baseball in Cayman is progressing well with a hard-working team behind the scenes and big plans for the future.

This trip and the many others certainly help to attract more teams to the islands and enable the club to host an international tournament in the future.

Stuart Knox the league’s president said: ‘We were given a great reaction from the other teams and quite a few said they look forward to coming to Cayman for a tournament in future.

‘That’s great for our association and more good exposure for the Cayman Islands, but most importantly it was an unforgettable and valuable experience for the kids.

‘They learned a great deal about sportsmanship, skill and ability and will have benefited a great deal from exposure to other kids from all over the world.’

Cayman Islands Little League Association is grateful for the support of the coaches and parents and their many sponsors, including WestTel, Digicel, Cayman National Bank, Butterfield Bank, Consolidated Water, Dart Management, UBS, Tortuga Rum Co Ltd, and Progressive Distributors who all pulled together to ensure a successful trip.
