Sunset eclipse stuttering Scholars

Scholars International have gone from being unbeaten in their first 10 Premier League games to losing their last two.

A struggling Sunset FC, bottom of the league and ravaged by injuries, handed high-flying Scholars International another unexpected loss.

The Cayman Islands Football Association Premier League game was played on Sunday at the TE McField Sports Centre in a live televised game.

Rowen Cross was the hero of the afternoon scoring the all important goal for Sunset in the 31st minute in the 1-0 victory.

Scholars striker Nikolai Hill and Sunset’s Emmanuel Brown got sent off for fighting.

Scholars started the season with a bang but seem to have lost their way since they have changed their starting line up. They played well and were unlucky in not finding the back of the net despite making several attempts at goal.

In the other game played earlier at this same venue George Town lost to Tigers 3-2.

In West Bay at the Ed Bush Stadium Bodden Town and Future battled to a 0-0 stalemate while the game between defending champions Elite SC and Roma United ended prematurely because of a brawl eight minutes from the end.

Roma were leading 2-1 thanks to two goals from Dwayne Wright. The first was from the penalty spot and the second from a free kick. Rene Carter scored Elite’s.

At the Annex, it was George Town’s striker David Harding who drew first blood in the sixth minute. Lende Carter levelled in the 13th minute.

In the 59th minute Harding completed his double. In the 75th minute the prolific Keigel Atkinson equalized for Tigers for his ninth of the season.

With both teams determined to get the points, they continued to attack and defend with all the energy they could find. In the 87th minute Carter sealed the issue with the winner.

Football takes a break until after the festive season when Elite face Bodden Town and Tigers meet George Town in the first leg of the semi-finals of the Digicel Cup on Sunday 10 January. The return leg will be played on 24 January. Both games will be played at the TE McField Sports Field.

On 17 January the Premier League resumes with Tigers playing Bodden Town at the Bodden Town play field at 5pm and at 7pm Elite encounter Future at this same venue.

At the Annex Roma will meet Sunset at 5pm and George Town battles with Scholars at 7pm.

Scholars are still leading with 24 points followed by George Town and Tigers on 20. Newcomers Bodden Town are on 16, Future and Sunset have 12 points while Roma are still at the bottom with 11.

With these three teams at the top with narrow margins in the point standings it will be interesting to see how the games unfold when the league resumes.
