GT cadets ace inspection

The Cayman Islands Cadet Corp,
George Town detachment is the winner in a recent inspection parade.

The detachment was in competition against
their counterparts from South Sound and the marine detachment in a smart dress
turnout.

The 25 basically new cadets, 13 of
whom were female, were alert and showed precision of movement as instructors
gave them parade orders.

Cadet warrant officer Shanice
Kelly, who has been involved with the Cadet Corp for the past eight years,
headed up the cadet parade at the First Assembly Church of God on Linford
Pierson Highway on Saturday.

After the short parade, the cadets
lined up smartly to be inspected by Cayman Islands Royal Police Inspector Ian
Brellisford accompanied by Major Andy White, officer commander of Bravo Company
in Cayman Brac.

Inspector Brellisford timely
inspected each cadet and at times stopped to inquire of a cadet how they were
doing, or to compliment individual cadets.

As well as being assessed on an
individual basis, each of the sections was judged as a whole.

Former British paratrooper Derrick
Larner along with other cadet inspectors graded each cadet during the
inspection turnout.

During the day the cadets were also
involved in competitive activities against each other. These involved
activities such as self defence, first aid and drilling.

The detachment also participated in
a class that involved measuring distance with map and compass.

According to Detachment Commander
Dave Thompson, the cadets are involved in a yearly inspection that focuses on
deficiencies, to see what their point of standards is and if they have grasped
the concepts of the Cadet Corps. “Training is done in a spirit of competition,”
he said.

This year he said there will be two
sets competing in Cayman and the winners will go on to compete against cadets
in Cayman Brac.

Over 150 cadets between Grand Cayman, the
Brac, and Little Cayman are involved in the programme.

The band detachment meets Mondays
from 4.30-6.30pm at the Church of God First Assembly grounds.

George Town and South Sound meets
at John Gray Tuesdays and Thursday.  The
Marine detachment meets at First Assembly on Wednesdays 5-7pm.
