Cayman Islands man shot dead in Tampa

Police in Tampa,
Florida have confirmed that a Cayman Islands man was shot to death during what appeared
to be a robbery on Wednesday afternoon.

The victim was identified as
William Richard Wood, 50. He had been living in Saint Petersburg, Florida,
according to police.

Investigators said Mr. Wood was in
an apartment on Gordon Street
in Tampa with another
man when two gunmen knocked on the door.

The second man in the apartment,
identified as Arthur Scott, 65, opened the door and found a gun pointed at him.

Tampa police said
one of the suspects went to a back bedroom of the apartment where he shot Mr.
Wood before taking property and fleeing the scene.

Mr. Wood died from the gunshot
wound. Mr. Scott was apparently unharmed.

Police had reported no arrests in
the shooting by Thursday morning.

William Wood is the son of Buddy
Wood of Bodden Town. The elder Mr. Wood was believed to have left Cayman for Tampa on Thursday night.

According to the St. Petersburg Times newspaper,  Mr. Wood died at Tampa General Hospital
Wednesday evening.

Mr. Wood’s estranged wife told the Times he had spent Tuesday night partying at the
Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino but came home after losing a couple hundred
dollars.

“Being from the Cayman Islands, he wasn’t street smart,” Sandy Wood said.
“But he had a big heart.”

He decided to continue partying, she said, so he had a friend pick him up in
St. Petersburg and take him back to Tampa.

According to the newspaper, Mr. Wood’s roommate last talked with him at 11 a.m. Wednesday, when he said he
didn’t need a ride back to St. Petersburg.
