Hockey extravaganza weekend is here
as the WestTel Youth Roller Hockey league heats up with Inter-School action
along with the start of the spring playoffs.
The action begins on Friday May 21
with the third annual Inter-School Tournament, hosted at the WestTel Arena at
King’s Sports Centre. Opening up the tournament will be the junior teams from
Montessori by the Sea and St. Ignatius at 2:30pm, followed by the senior teams
from the same schools at 3:30pm. The
second match-up will see the friendly rivalry of Cayman International School
and Cayman Prep, with the juniors facing off at 4:30pm and the seniors at
5:30pm. The competition draws hundreds of youth spectators from all of the
schools and entrance is free for all spectators.
In the WestTel Youth Roller Hockey
League playoff action begins Saturday May 22 with the PeeWee division as the
number one seed Appleby Sharks face the number four Vampt Oilers at 8am
followed by the 2009 champion Five-Continent Leafs against the Hurleys Hawks at
Coach Dan Etherington of the Oilers
commented on his team’s season and upcoming playoff game: “Our team has worked hard all season and we
have a great group of youngsters. We know we’re an underdog team coming into
Saturday, but our kids want to play and they really want to give the Sharks a
run for the title. Win or lose we’re
still going to have a lot of fun out there.”
The WestTel Mites division takes to
the floor at 10am as the Dart Ducks and Deloitte Wild do battle while the
Conyers Canucks face the Maples Stars at 11am.
The mighty Mites, who are mostly five years-old, recently graduated from
the half-court game format and will be finishing the season playing on
two-thirds of the arena.
The large Novice division will see
the division-dominant dms Bruins take on the XN Financial Flames at 12pm.
Although winless this season, the Flames produced their best offensive
performance of the season in week nine.
In the second Novice match-up the Coldwell-Banker Rangers meet the
Walkers Blue Iguanas.
The brewing rivalry this season has
been within the highly competitive WestTel Atom division. There is no underdog
in this divisional playoff series. Although sitting at the third and fourth
positions, the KPMG Senators and LOM Capitals have the skill and potential to
see each other in the finals, especially after their victorious performances in
week nine. LOM faces number one seed
Eats Blazers at 2:30 PM while KPMG tnagles with number two seed Animal House
Penguins at 3:30pm.
“This weekend only comes once a
year”, sates Ray Singh, organizer of the weekend festivities. “The Inter-School Tournament is a sizable fun
event and the WestTel league playoffs are going to be a thrilling rollercoaster
ride. This is really is the Hockey Extravaganza
weekend for Cayman Hockey!”
