Cayman out but may still qualify

Cayman’s
hopes of reaching the second round of the Digicel Caribbean Cup have stalled
for the time being after they lost 2-0 in their final match against host nation
Puerto Rico.

But
Cayman still have a chance of going through if they end up as one of the top
two second-place finishers. The Group A match at the Juan Ramon Loubriel
Stadium, San Juan, was a tense affair but it was Puerto Rico who took their
chances better with goals from Chris Megaloudis in the 25th minute and Luis
Figueroa in the 87th minute. Mark Ebanks was the most threatening Cayman player
coming close several times.

Technical
director Carl Brown said: “While I was not happy with the result I was really
pleased with the performance, we competed very well against a good Puerto Rican
team.”

Puerto
Rico advance to stage 2 of the Digicel Cup with maximum points from their three
games. Cayman Islands finished runners-up on four points so must wait their
fate when the runners-up from Groups B and C are known. Only two runners-up
from the three groups will go through to Stage 2.

Puerto
Rico will play in Group E, along with the winner of Group B, Grenada, plus
Guadaloupe. Puerto Rico’s next game is against Guadaloupe on 20 October. In
Group B on Wednesday, St Vincent and the Grenadines smashed Montserrat 7-0 and
Barbados drew 1-1 with St Kitts & Nevis.
