Man charged in West Bay killing

Royal Cayman Islands Police have charged a 39-year-old man in connection with the death of Tyrone Burrell in West Bay last month.

Mr. Burrell, 20, was shot and killed in the yard of a home on Birch Tree Hill Road Wednesday, 8 September.

The 39-year-old suspect – identified Tuesday morning in court proceedings as Leonard Antonio Ebanks –  has been charged with murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

He is due to appear in court again on 19 October.

The September shooting happened in the same West Bay yard where Damion Ming was shot in March of this year.
Police said Burrell was known to be associated with
people involved in gangs. Other sources informed the Caymanian Compass that
Burrell had been an associate of Ming’s.

According to police, Burrell’s mother had dropped him off
for a party at the Birch Tree Hill Road location earlier that
8 September evening.

Police believe Burrell did have information relating to
Ming’s killing, but he never took that information to the police and was never
identified as a police witness.

“We believe that Tyrone did have valuable information
related to the Damion Ming killing,” RCIPS Superintendent Marlon Bodden said in September. .

Mr. Bodden added that if Burrell had gone to the police with
his information “we may not be sitting here today talking about another wasted
young life.”
