Belcher’s fizzing after seven up

Elite striker Alex Belcher has the honour of being the first ever Footballer of the Month for his exceptional October when he scored seven times, including five against Bodden Town in their 7-1 trouncing. His others came against Future and Scholars International.

Belcher, 24, was at the Cayman Islands Football Association Centre of Excellence on Wednesday to pick up his award from CIFA president Jeffrey Webb, who said: “Alex, on behalf of the football association and Premier League, we would like to recognise you and congratulate you as the footballer of the month.

“You had an outstanding few games in October, becoming the leading goalscorer not just for the month but also until now. Congratulations and I hope you keep up the good work. I don’t think it’s any coincidence that Elite is doing so well and lead in the league with 19 points.”

Belcher began playing as a small boy in his Honduras homeland and fitted in well in the Cayman system when he arrived four years ago, initially playing for Latinos as a defender.

He was a forward in Honduras and his striking abilities were only noticed when he formed a potent partnership with Dwayne ‘Gaza’ Wright on a summer tour in September.

So far, it’s worked. Elite have won six and drawn only one. Belcher is confident they can win the league and the both cups, FA and Digicel. “This season we are more united,” he said. “We are working together. Everybody is pulling in the same line. I think we’re going to make it. I want to score any amount.

November hasn’t been fruitful at all. It started badly after being sent off for two yellow cards against Roma. So he missed the next match and didn’t score in the third. Belcher hopes to get back on the winning trail on Sunday in the 5pm game against East End at the TE McField Annex Sports Centre. The feature game, kick off, 7pm is between the defending champs Scholars International and high-flying Tigers. The match will be replayed on TV at Aqua Beach at 9pm.

At the G. Haig Bodden Sports Centre, Future play Roma at 5pm and Bodden Town take on George Town at 7pm.
