Attempted robbery at WB store

Royal Cayman Islands Police detectives are investigating an attempted robbery at a West Bay convenience store.

At around 3pm Tuesday, police said a masked man armed with a machete entered L’s Grocery store, North West Point Road, West Bay and confronted a male cashier.

A photo of the mask the suspect wore was released by officers on Wednesday.

Police said the would-be robber tried to grab cash from the register but was unable to open it. He then allegedly ran from the store empty handed and is thought to have made off across Aloe Lane.

A short distance from the store a mask and a machete were recovered. But the suspect has not been found.

The suspect is described as around 5’10”, with a light complexion and thin build. Witnesses said he was wearing a white or cream coloured long sleeved shirt, which had buttons and a flower pattern on the front. He also wore light coloured full length jeans.

Detective Constable Nathan Turner asks for anyone with information about the crime to come forward.

“This is a very distinctive mask. If you know anyone who owns a mask similar to the one in the photograph, or you are a retailer who has recently sold one of these masks, I would be keen to talk to you,” DC Turner said.

Anyone with information can call the West Bay Police Station at 949-3999 or Crime Stoppers at 800-8477.
