Instead of running away from dogs, local triathlete and runner Mike Ridsdale will run for them on Sunday, 16 January.
With the Cross Island Relay only a couple of weeks away, Mr. Ridsdale has decided to take the cross island challenge to a whole new level, all for charity. He will be running from Morgan’s Harbour in West Bay all the way to Kaibo, following the coastal road through Bodden Town and East End. The run will total some 46 miles, almost double the distance of a standard marathon. Mr. Ridsdale will be doing the run to raise funds for renovation work at the Cayman Islands Humane Society.
According to Mr. Ridsdale, he had been thinking about doing the run for quite a while. He often participates in local running events with running partner Pretty Girl, a resident at the Humane Society’s shelter on North Sound Road and he decided an event like a charity run round the island would be the perfect way to thank his running partner for the miles together.
“I plan on starting at 5am so the majority of the run will be after the sun has come up. I have been training specifically for this for the past few months. The biggest issue, apart from the distance, will be the heat. It really does take its toll on you after a few hours,” said Mr. Ridsdale.
He is hoping that the event will raise awareness about the animals at the Humane Society shelter as well as raise money for the organisation.
“I personally want to give a shout out for Pretty Girl, who is an adorable dog and has spent 18 months [at the shelter].
Please visit her and if someone could offer her a home, that would be the best result for me,” he said.
