Olympic hopefuls can start focusing on gold again

Cayman’s aspiring track stars get their first chance to flex their limbs with the year’s opening meet on Saturday.

Cayman hosted the CARIFTA Games last Easter and after Chantelle Morrison’s gold medal win in the 100 metres, plenty of local youngsters are now focusing on the track.

The Cayman Islands Athletic Association commences its 2011 season with the first district meet from 9am at the Town Hall Field in West Bay. All former athletes and track and field enthusiasts are invited in preparation for upcoming national and overseas meets.

The meet after that is a mid-week one, on Thursday 27 January which allow athletes to compete in those events that are not included in the district meets.

Age groups eligible to compete in the West Bay district meet are: 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15-16, 17 and over. Events to be contested are: long jump, ball throw, shot pout, 80 metres sprint, 150m, 400m, 800m and 1500m.
