The Stingray Swim Club has another meet this week, sponsored by the Caledonian Group. It is the Caledonian Summer Splash, spread over three days; today (Wednesday), Friday and Sunday. In between that the swimmers will be involved en mass at the Flowers One Mile Sea swim on Saturday.
Stingray’s top performers are used to dominating the top ten finishers but they will have to play second fiddle this time because world champions and Olympic medallists are vying for top honours and some of the $100,000 prizes and cash on offer at the Flowers swim.
Everyone will also have the honour of swimming alongside golden girl Penny Palfrey, who on Sunday finished her world record marathon 67.25 mile swim from Little Cayman to Grand Cayman.
The Caledonian Group is sponsoring this meet for the third year running. With former national coach Dave Kelsheimer again bringing a team over from Australia and the memory of such a vibrant and successful Lions meet two weeks ago still fresh in the mind, all is set for a great weekend of swimming in the sea and pool.
“We are pleased to be annual sponsors of this Stingray swim meet as swimming affords individuals a wide array of health benefits,” said Bernard McGrath, Caledonian managing director. “The Stingray Swim Club not only helps to develop children physically but mentally as well, as the coaches work with each child to help him or her achieve success at their individual levels of ability.
“We look forward to this weekend’s meet as well as continuing our support of the swim club in the years to come.”
