Flowers boosts Meal on Wheels

The Flowers Sea Swim was the best so far in its 19-year history. Well over 800 entered and 768 finished. It was all for a good cause too, with thousands raised for the designated charity of Meals on Wheels, which was heavily promoted by Kerri Kanuga who actually swam too.

The one mile race from the Ritz-Carlton to Royal Palms last week came soon after Penny Palfrey’s historic world record 67.25 mile Bridging the Islands swim from Little Cayman to Grand Cayman.

All in all, it was a fabulous opportunity to highlight the brilliance of Cayman’s open water excellence, organised by Frank Flowers and daughter Dara Flowers-Burke.

Won by visiting American Charles ‘Chip’ Peterson, 23, he had the satisfaction of not just winning but beating the course record too, by eight seconds to finish in 17 minutes six seconds and nab a US$5,000 cash bonus.

Cayman’s swimmers did exceptionally well too. Geoffrey Butler is only 15 but he beat all the locals to finish seventh overall in 18:53. Joel Rombough – who won the race three years ago – was 12th in 19:42 and Alex McCallum was a second behind him. Tori Flowers, another 15-year-old being groomed by coach Dominic Ross for great things, was first Cayman female to finish. She was 16th overall in 20:33 and her sister Summer was next in of the Caymanians in 21st place in 21:24.
