Midsummer’s Night student auditions

Auditions under way for Cayman Drama Society’s student production

A talent search is on for the cast of a student adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, directed by Alisa Bowen for the Cayman Drama Society.

The last day of auditions for actors ages 6 -17 and crew ages 13 to 20 is Sunday, 21 August. Auditions will be from 1-4pm at the Prospect Playhouse on Shamrock Road, adjacent to the Lighthouse School.

The adaptation

Bowen has edited Shakespeare’s original script specifically for children in a way that sets the story on a magical island with Titania as a mermaid; Puck portrayed as a mischievous, talking Blue Iguana; sea turtles, fairies, and lovers entranced by reggae music and magical flower juice, only to discover themselves lost in the mangroves, sea grapes and beach.

Bowen arrives with her impressive resume as a director from the United States, where she pursued master’s studies in theatre at Harvard University, graduated cum laude from Kent State University with a Fine Arts in Theatre degree, and studied with theatre professionals at Niagara University, New York State School for the Arts and The Royal Shakespeare Company.

She has directed children’s theatre for almost 15 years. She arrived on Grand Cayman last year after completing a directorship at Big Arts on Sanibel Island, Florida, to direct and educate children in theatre at the Cayman National Cultural Foundation.

For the past year, she has educated and directed young actors in an intense conservatory-style acting class at the Harquail Theatre in the [email protected] programme and student performers in the Gimistory festival.

She has also volunteered in children’s theatre education at Hope Academy in Grand Harbour.

First auditions held

Bowen, along with Executive Producer Karie Bergstrom and Producer/Theatre Manager Paul de Frietas held the first auditions last weekend. Students who are interested should show up on Sunday – the last day to audition.

The production will also require the following non-acting student members: co-director, co-producer, stage nanager, stage crew, lighting design and technician, sound technician and front of house manager and crew.
