Mining the Brac

The shortage of crushed rock and consequent importation of aggregate to the Cayman Islands may no longer need to be the case, with the largest rock crushing operation in the Cayman Islands existing on Cayman Brac.

Scott’s Development Company Limited may be one of the best kept secrets in the Cayman Islands. The company, which has one of the highest standard operations in the region has been in business for over 32 years.

“We want to let people know that they don’t have to go Mexico or Jamaica to source aggregate. We are able to support all of the local needs right here and the rock that we provide is a stronger rock than can be obtained in most places,” said Supervisor Mervin Scott.

The company also manufactures sand and boasts two large quarries; one in Cayman Brac and one in Little Cayman.

Currently Scott’s Development Company is assisting with the road refurbishment project in Cayman Brac.

“We supply all aggregate to Little Cayman and Cayman Brac and can produce large quantities of fresh rock for a reasonable price. We also have ready mix concrete, in addition to providing services such as drilling wells and block making,” explained Mr. Scott.

He said there are some companies in the Cayman Islands that are taking advantage of the availability of high grade crushed rock right next door as opposed to going in search of the resource in other countries in the region, but extended an open invitation to anyone who wanted to buy local, save money and get a superior product while doing so.

In Grand Cayman the quality of much of the rock at existing quarries has been compromised and found to contain chloride as a result of over mining, according to industry insiders, who say the rock available on Grand Cayman is good for fill but not concrete. New quarries are subject to stringent planning approval, while importation of the crushed rock has to be sanctioned by the Agricultural Department.

These challenges have made Scott’s Development an attractive choice because of its proximity to Grand Cayman, as well as its considerable stockpile of sourceable aggregate.

“We have been supplying some companies in Grand Cayman at the moment but people need to know that aggregate can still be sourced within the Cayman Islands,” said Mr. Scott.
