Come and cheer the runners on

The Intertrust Cayman Islands Marathon, Half-Marathon, 4-Person Relay and Kids Fun Run is this weekend and the organisers are pleading for the public’s support and assistance on Sunday.

The race starts at 5am at Breezes By The Bay restaurant on the waterfront and takes runners along South Church Street into South Sound, onto Old Prospect Road where they turn around and go back onto South Sound and then up Walkers Road and Hospital Road into Central George Town, crossing the finish line at Breezes.

The greatest challenge is the traffic along the route which has posed a safety risk to the runners and the volunteers in the past. Race Director Rhonda Kelly is imploring the public to avoid driving on the route if possible and to take extra precautions if they have to use those particular roads.

“We are begging the driving public to please keep traffic to a minimum on these roads between the hours of 5am to 10am,” said Kelly. “Last year we had several motorists who drove fast and without care really causing concern to our runners and volunteers on the road and we do not want the same thing to happen this year. We not only have more local runners but more visitors who are running here for the first time and do not know our roads or our traffic laws. Please be kind to our runners! We want them to have a safe and memorable race experience.”

Kelly is also asking residents along the course to secure their dogs in their yards, put on any Christmas lights they might have, and come out and cheer the runners as they pass by. Letters have also been hand delivered to the residents who live along the route so that they are aware of the event.

“What we would love to see happen is for the community to embrace the marathon, and actually look forward to this event, and come out and support the race,” said Kelly. “The Cayman Marathon will never be as big as a Boston or New York but as it continues to grow we would like to see the Cayman community own this event as one that brings visitors to our beautiful shores, stimulates our economy in terms of money spent here by the tourists and another way to promote the warmth and hospitality for which we are known. Therefore, we are asking for the public’s cooperation and spirit of goodwill for these few hours on Sunday.”
