Got a taste for volunteering?

The annual Taste of Cayman Food and Wine Festival at Camana Bay is seven weeks away and as preparations begin the Cayman Islands Tourism Association and Digicel (Cayman) are calling for volunteers.

With the event in its 24th year, Taste of Cayman’s volunteers have been the heart of each festival. This year’s event on 28 January, 2012, at Camana Bay will feature an interactive photo booth, raffle entry, favourite restaurant competition, cooking demonstrations, bar lounges and volunteer support will be needed for oversight.

Each year, the number of food and beverage booths as well as the number of guests increases. Volunteer support has become integral to ensuring that the lines and attractions run smoothly.

“There are a number of areas to get involved in, such as drink and ticket sales, bartending, gate support, retail sales for festival products, behind the scenes ticket packaging support, administrative and creative support,” said Lucy Wilcox, event manager. “The only type of qualification Taste of Cayman volunteers are asked to have is the interest to get involved and make this event a continued success and the more enthusiasm one brings the better.”

While some volunteer roles, such as bartending or cashier require experience, there are many areas of the festival requiring no formal experience as training and support will be provided.

Volunteer sponsor

Taste of Cayman has partnered with Digicel (Cayman) as the official volunteer sponsor for the 2012 food and wine festival. The commitment provided by Digicel will go a long way to ensuring the 200 volunteers being recruited to support the event are kept informed, trained and taken care of throughout the night.

“This is Digicel’s first time as the volunteer sponsor for Taste of Cayman and we are proud to take on the task of organising this very important group of people,” said Victor Corcoran, chief executive officer of Digicel (Cayman). “Volunteers are an integral part to ensuring this event’s success and by bringing together the volunteers, we are ensuring that everyone is informed and knows what they are responsible for. There is growing excitement around this event and we encourage and welcome all volunteers who want to get involved and help out with this uniquely Caymanian event.”

In exchange for working at the festival, volunteers may receive free entry into the festival, free food tickets, as well as entry into a Digicel sponsored volunteer appreciation raffle in exchange for each shift they work.
