Sudden passing in Lyneth’s family postpones matches

A death close to the Cayman netball fraternity recently cancelled a pair of games.

Saturday’s double-header at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex netball courts was put off with the passing of the Cayman Islands Netball Association vice president’s mother. Association secretary Norma Ferryman spoke about the reasoning for the cancellation.

“All netball games scheduled for Saturday, 11 February were cancelled,” Ferryman said. “Mrs. Lyneth Monteith, the association vice president, lost her mother Mrs. Alma Howell. Mrs. Howell was a pioneer in the education system in the Cayman Islands and has served the education system for many years. As a mark of respect and solidarity of her passing, the president of the association (Lucille Seymour) and the executive committee decided to cancel all games.

“Games are scheduled to play as usual on the netball schedule. A new date will be set for Saturday’s game.”

All Stars and Unity were slated to have its A and B teams in action. Monteith is a veteran player/coach for All Stars who provides good passes for the A team and sound advice for the B side.

Both clubs will hit the courts again in the coming days. Unity B faces Roma A this Thursday, 16 February, at 6.30pm. AS B plays this Saturday, 18 February. AS A is not slated to compete again until 8 March.

In spite of its abysmal record, Unity is never short of enthusiasm. One of the most optimistic club members is team president Faye Green, who states she intends to dust off her shoes and show her skills on Thursday.

“We have new coaches and I’m actually going to play for the B team,” Green said. “I love to play. We’re not going to go out there and take things lightly. We’re going out and putting up a fight. We will come strong and show our strength.”
