More ganja has been found in an office area of Her Majesty’s Prison at Northward, the Caymanian Compass has confirmed.

Her Majesty’s Cayman Islands Prison Service Deputy Director Daniel Greaves said about one ounce of marijuana was found in the shift commander’s office inside the prison facility by prison officials after they received intelligence.

“[B]ecause of the amount of surveillance we have been conducting in the past few months, prisoners are looking for new ways and places to beat the system.”

Mr. Greaves said it was believed the drugs were placed in the office by orderlies – who have access for cleaning and maintenance – in a bid to find ways to store contraband in response to efforts by prison staff to combat the flow of drugs.

“Extensive searches have them getting innovative and we have been causing them [prisoners] a lot of hardship with our efforts,” Mr. Greaves said.

He said drugs floating around the prison compromises rehabilitation efforts set out by the Portfolio of Internal and External Affairs, which was why prison staff is giving added attention to the matter.

Just a few days ago, 4 ounces of ganja was found in the administrative office known as the White House, where the director and deputy director’s offices are located.
