The 2012 Million Dollar Run kicked off with a cocktail reception at the Cayman Motor Museum in West Bay on Thursday, 5 April, where the captains and special guests gathered for a social.
This year’s line up of captains included Andreas Ugland, Merlin Seymour, Dale Crighton and Bob Watler.
Also in attendance at the reception were representatives from supporting sponsors, who included Jason Felts – CEO of Virgin Produced, a branch of Richard Branson’s Virgin brand that creates films such as the Immortals, Machine Gun Preacher and Limitless.
This is the first year Virgin has participated as a sponsor in the Million Dollar Run.
“The connection Virgin has with this event is based on adventure, speed and excitement. These are all things people associate with our brand.
We will also be producing an eight minute video around the event to be showcased on all Virgin planes to highlight the Million Dollar Run, as well as the Cayman Islands as an exciting destination,” Mr. Felts said.
Now in its 10th year, the Million Dollar Run was conceived as a friendly competition between friends Kenny Rankin and Andreas Ugland and mushroomed into the annual event that has now become a draw for visitors from around the world and one of the most anticipated events on the Caymanian calendar.
Mr. Rankin said he saw the potential for the race after visiting Norway and seeing how many people were attracted to similar types of events. “It’s a great attraction for families and kids,” he noted.
Andreas Ugland said he was looking forward to a great day of racing and was particularly excited about having brought a boat to Grand Cayman from Norway for the event.
