Police said the man was arrested on suspicion of robbery Friday in George Town. He has not been charged in connection with the incident.
A total of four people, including a suspected getaway driver, were involved in an armed bank robbery in downtown George Town, according to reports by the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service.
Eyewitnesses told the Caymanian Compass that at least one armed suspect entered the Scotiabank on Cardinall Avenue in downtown George Town just before noon Thursday and pointed a weapon at a bank employee.
“He had something pointed at the fella,” according to one witness to the robbery who spoke to the Compass minutes after the incident occurred. “He was dark, and had some kinda bandages wrapped over his head.”
“I called and I was just asking [my husband] what time he wanted to pick up lunch and he said ’oh I’ve got to go the bank’s being robbed’,” said Tara Thompson who was outside the bank minutes after the robbery was reported.
According to a police report issued on the robbery, there were three masked men involved in the robbery: “Three masked men, two of whom were armed with what appeared to be firearms, entered Scotia Bank in Cardinal Avenue, George Town. The men threatened staff and customers before making off from the scene with a sum of cash.”
No shots were fired during the robbery and none of the staff or customers were injured.
Police said the suspects ran off from the bank and hopped in a getaway vehicle – a dark blue coloured Honda Accord car – which was parked, with a waiting driver, directly outside the bank. The car was then seen to drive off towards the Eastern Avenue area, according to police.
Shortly after the robbery, police released a photograph of one of the suspects entering the getaway car. This photo had been taken by a tourist and passed to police. Officers would ask anyone else who was in the area and took photos of the suspects, or the car, to contact them.
Police officers found the car abandoned on Bronze Road a short time after the robbery. Bronze Road is located behind the church of the New Testament off North Sound Road.
The suspects were described as follows:
• Male, approximately 6ft 3 inches in height, dark coloured skin, stocky build, wearing a light blue hooded top, dark blue jeans
• Male, approximately 5ft 7 inches in height, slim build, wearing a black hood and a brown/grey plaid print jacket, dark trousers
• Male, approximately 5ft 7 inches in height, stocky build.
• There is no description available at this time of the getaway driver.
Cardinal Avenue was busy at the time of the robbery. In addition, anyone who was in the Bronze Road area and saw the suspects abandon the vehicle is asked to come forward.
