Man with toy gun causes stir

Royal Cayman Islands Police arrested a man who they said was waving what looked like a machine gun around in central George Town early Saturday.

The weapon turned out to be a fake, but officers arrested the man on suspicion of possessing an imitation firearm with intent to commit an offence.

Around 2am Saturday, police were called to a location outside Shedden Road near Funky Tangs where a male was said to be armed with an AK-47.

When they arrived, police said they ordered the man to drop the weapon. He refused and turned to face the officers, still holding the toy gun. Eventually, police convinced the man to drop the imitation firearm and he was taken into custody. No one was hurt.

Some of the officers that responded to the scene were armed units and RCIPS Superintendent Kurt Walton said the man with the fake weapon was lucky not to have been injured.

“The level of restraint displayed by those officers in this instance is unbelievable,” Mr. Walton said. “They could have never known at the time that the weapon held by this suspect was not real.”

Gun seized, three arrested

In a separate incident that occurred around the same time, RCIPS officers stopped a vehicle in the Seymour Drive area of George Town and searched the car.

A semi-automatic handgun was found during the search.

That’s when trouble started.

One of the suspects inside the car took off on foot, police said, while another attempted to grab the handgun back from the officer that found it.

The first man was caught after a brief search and police eventually managed to wrestle the gun away from the second suspect without injury.

Two men, aged 26 and 24, were arrested along with a 21-year-old woman on suspicion of possessing an unlicensed firearm.

Mr. Walton commended the officers as “brave” and said the incident was a “prime example of what good policing is all about”.

  2. It’s strange that the toy gun incident gets the headline while the two unarmed police fighting hand to hand with suspects over a real gun gets stuck at the bottom.
