Hallelujah! It’s a gospel master class

Hallelujah: Praises in the Courtyard is a cracking-looking gospel bash on Friday and Saturday, 25-26 May at 6.30pm at the University College of the Cayman Islands campus in George Town.

The third in a series of shows benefitting the development of a performing arts programme at UCCI, Hallelujah promises two nights of spiritual upliftment regardless of one’s religious denomination, we’re told.

It is headlined by local superstar Quincy Brown and Jamaican gospel singer Crissy D. and will also feature performances from the Savannah United Church Choir, New Testament George Town Young Adult Choir, Victory Tabernacle Choir, Christ the Redeemer Choir, Daphne Orrett, Opal Lorraine, the UCCI Choir, Dancers and Pandemix Steelband.

Artistic director and choreographer Monika Lawrence tells us it’s the objective of UCCI to reach out to the wider community.

“It is our hope that Hallelujah will galvanize and stimulate greater interest. In addition, the programme will give our students the opportunity to perform and showcase skills being taught at the university while building character.

“The exposure will better prepare them for the working world,” she says.

Mister music

The university’s own Mr. Music and international concert pianist Glen Inanga echoes her thoughts.

“Our students now have a better appreciation of the amount of hard work that is required to attain the levels of excellence expected of them.

“In addition, through continued exposure to high quality performances and collaborations with visiting international artistes, the performance bar has been raised sufficiently high enough to help them identify new learning points and areas for growth.”

It is for this same reason that UCCI always finds a way to collaborate with other performers in the community, Monika says.

“We are grateful for the immense support we have received from the church and school choirs, individual performers who are giving of their time and talents freely.

“We have much to be thankful for in Cayman, and we are happy that there are people in the community who are willing to support our students and join us to give thanks for our beloved country,” Dr. Lawrence says.

The organisers said that they would like to thank the Caymanian Compass, dms Broadcasting and Foster’s Food Fair IGA for their contributions.

Hallelujah tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and children. They are available for purchase at Funky Tangs, Books & Books, Arabus and the UCCI Admin Office. For further information, email [email protected]
