Raining cats and dogs

Cayman Islands Humane Society flooding main

Rain flooded the Cayman Islands Humane Society building with ankle-deep water Monday, sending volunteers scrambling to move the animals to drier ground. Due to the standing water, dogs and cats housed in ground-level cages indoors had to be relocated to kennels outside, even though it meant being exposed to the continually falling rain.

Volunteers said the North Sound Road facility is prone to flooding when there is heavy rain – or in the most recent instance, when there is steady precipitation over a prolonged period of time. Flooding also made the Humane Society’s parking lot inaccessible for smaller vehicles.

The Humane Society building in George Town was not the only place in Grand Cayman that struggled with Monday’s deluge.

According to the Cayman Islands Weather Service, an average of some 4.96 inches of rain fell on the Island between midnight and 12.30pm Monday. That was approximately three times the amount of rain the Island had received for the entire month previous to Monday.

According to the Cayman Islands National Weather Service, satellite pictures show a large area of cloudiness with embedded thunderstorms moving Northeastward across the Cayman area. Weather models indicate rainfall amounts of 3 to 4 inches are likely during the next 24 hours with a maximum of 8 inches. Continued flooding of low lying areas is expected during the next 24 hours and residents are urged to take necessary precautions.

Additionally, south to southeast winds of 15 to 20 knots and rough seas are expected to continue over the area. Higher gusts in and around heavy showers will continue. A small craft warning is in effect.

The Cayman Islands National Weather Service will continue to monitor the progress of this system.

Next severe weather bulletin will be issued May 22nd at 5 a.m.
