Cayman netball recently made a historic step forward.
The national finals were played indoors, for the first time, last Saturday at Camana Bay’s Arts and Recreation Centre. The Cayman Islands Netball Association would crown its national champion and consolation winner in the 2012 open league.
All Stars A, sponsored by Central Cooling, would defeat Roma A 39-28 for their first championship in some five years. Behind a fast-paced attack featuring Goal Shooter Nicola Williams and Goal Attack Stacy Reid-Satahoo, All Stars never trailed. They enjoyed advantages of 10-5, 9-7, 9-6 and 11-10 in each of the game’s four quarters.
Roma, the reigning two-time champs, never got its offence in gear as Kay Copeland and Nicola Pringle struggled to receive the ball from mid-court. Credit those struggles to a dogged defensive effort from the AS trio of Goal Keeper Teneisha Wilson, Goal Defence Cynthia Collington and Wing Defence Kimesha Walters.
The consolation finale was also a one-sided affair as the Flames Strikers, sponsored by Tortuga, defeated Unity A 40-25. Flames, behind GS Marsha Campbell and GA Latoya Nixon, enjoyed advantages of 12-4, 11-6 and 9-6 in the first, second and fourth quarters. Unity added some intrigue, behind GS Tameka Brown, with a 9-8 edge in the third period.
