Brackers kick start MMA

A team of six people from Cayman Brac are eagerly awaiting their trip to George Town to take part in the mixed martial arts seminars next week.

They will join 34 others for two seminars from world renowned instructors at the Dalmain Ebanks Boxing Gym on 23 June.

Justin French, the team organiser, said “We are really excited to be able to take part in these seminars. We love martial arts in the Brac and appreciate the support the business community has given us.”

French and seminar organiser Bob Daigle plan on launching classes in the Brac in the near future. The training provided in these seminars will help increase everyone’s awareness of the mushrooming martial arts scene in the Cayman Islands.

“We would like to say a special thanks to Cayman Airways for sponsoring four tickets to Grand Cayman,” Daigle said. “I’m pleased that these young Cayman Brackers will have a chance to train with Danny Davis Jr, who is a three time amateur kickboxing champion and Derek Weaver a North American Grappling Champion. Coconut Car rental supplied a car for the team and an anonymous sponsor provided accommodations for two nights.

“These instructors are not just talented martial artists they are great role models for our youth. Just two days ago Danny Davis was on Fox TV Live talking about his upcoming fight that will help raise money for wounded soldiers. If you ever wanted to learn martial arts this is a great way to start.”

Davis also gives back to the community in Las Vegas by counselling at-risk kids about staying in school and keeping away from the wrong crowd. Weaver has a master’s degree in finance and helps tutor young people with their education needs.

Daigle said he would like to thank local instructor Master Steve Graham and Dr. Paulino Rodrigues for their help with putting this all together. “We all have over 30 years of martial experience and our No.1 goal with martial arts training is to build good character in our students. Special thanks to Burger King, Aqua Beach, Bud light, Red Bull , Cayman Kickboxing Academy and Master Graham for supplying the mats for the seminars.

“The sponsors can rest assured that their support is going towards something we all can be proud of.”
