dms donates school supplies for ‘Back to School’ initiative

It’s that time of year again where children and their parents are gearing up for the start of a new school year.

For some, this can be daunting when you have to face the expenses associated with it – new shoes, uniforms and school supplies, which all add up quickly.

On Saturday, 25 August, there was a mark of relief for many families when the first Back to School Bash was held at the People’s Progressive Movement political party headquarters in George Town to assist those who are struggling financially. The event was held in the afternoon from 3 to 5pm and all children and families in Grand Cayman were invited to enjoy bouncing castles and face painting.

The first 400 children received complimentary school supply kits thanks to the $2,000 cash contribution from dms Organization Ltd. and through the support of the PPM, which coordinated the initiative. The event was considered a great success with more than 400 children who turned out to enjoy the family fun day activities and receive their bags of school supplies.

“We had an overwhelming response,” said Alden McLaughlin, leader of the Opposition. “It demonstrated to us that this initiative was positively valued in the community. Witnessing the children get excited about their school supplies was rewarding in itself, but knowing they would be fully equipped to face their first day of school, ready to embrace knowledge, was really what we wanted to achieve.”

Leading up to this event, dms had been overwhelmed with requests for assistance for back to school supplies, which prompted the need to find a way to support families who are experiencing hardship.

“dms was delighted to have the opportunity to partner with PPM on their coordinated effort to support children and families with back to school expenses. Essentially our purpose here is to help the less fortunate towards their education and this was yet another channel for us to give back to the community,” said Trina Savage, vice president of marketing and communications for dms Organization.

dms supports educational endeavours through programmes such as the dms Gives Back corporate citizenship programme, the dms Scholarship Fund and the annual Joanna Clarke Awards, which was created to provide funding for educational endeavours within schools or nonprofit organisations.
