The 15th Annual Charitable Golf Tournament to benefit the Cayman Islands Red Cross tees off on Friday.
It is not too late to participate. The event at the North Sound Club has tee-off times at 8am and 1pm. The tournament features a four-man scramble format with a shotgun start. While the afternoon foursomes in the tournament are filled, space is available for the morning session.
Local businesses are also encouraged to sponsor a hole, which are available for as little as $300. Sponsorships include the display of the sponsor’s logo throughout the tournament and also on the Red Cross website for up to a year.
“This event offers tremendous opportunity for visibility, while supporting a great cause,” said Jason Waters, head of RBC Royal Bank retail banking in the Cayman Islands. RBC is one of the main tournament sponsors.
Those who decide to play, sponsor or donate will find their contributions going to a good cause. “One hundred per cent of the money we raise through the tournament will support the local programmes and activities of the Cayman Islands Red Cross,” said Jondo Obi, Director General of the Cayman Islands Red Cross. Two programme areas on which the Red Cross focuses its efforts are HIV and AIDS Education and First Aid and CPR Training, including water safety and lifeguarding.
“2012 marks the 10 year anniversary of our fight against the spread of HIV and AIDS in the Cayman Islands,” said Carolina Ferreira, CIRC Deputy Director and Programme Manager. “Our ‘Together We Can’ HIV and AIDS Peer Education Programme provides young people with the correct information about HIV and AIDS and gives them the responsibility to pass along that information to their peers. We have trained hundreds of youth during the past 10 years, some of whom have returned to the CIRC as volunteer trainers, continuing the cycle of education.”
The Red Cross also helps teach basic life saving skills by offering continuous CPR and First Aid training to the community. “Our trained volunteers provide coverage at events like marathons, national celebrations and parades, as well as during times of impending disasters,” added Peter Hughes, CIRC Training Manager. “We also offer Water Safety and Lifeguarding training, as there is an increased demand for these skills.”
Programmes like these are made available to residents of the Cayman Islands, through the generous donations of individuals and through charitable events, like the upcoming golf tournament. The event offers fabulous prizes, including the chance to win the legendary ‘silver coin’ prize, donated by 24K-Mon Jewelers, which will be awarded to the golfer with the ball closest to the hole, as well as a chance to win a 2012 BMW 118i donated by GT Automotive and a 2012 Jeep Liberty by Car City.
RBC Royal Bank is also sponsoring a putting contest. All prizes will be awarded at the ceremony that follows the golf tournament.
