In reference to your 17 September article concerning changes to the Traffic Law coming into effect 21 September, I wish to comment as follows.
Has anyone, and especially the police, considered the fact that approximately 10 per cent of Cayman drivers will be completely unaffected by the new law and will be free to continue texting and making mobile calls whilst driving, and also driving without fastening their seatbelts?.
I am of course referring to the large number of vehicles whose owners have such a high degree of tinting on all their windows, that it is completely impossible to see inside the vehicle even from 2 feet away.
I am well aware that there has been a law on the books for 30 years or more to limit the amount of tinting, but despite there being a number of very good reasons for the law, it has inexplicably never been effectively enforced. As a result, these vehicles can be used for any number of criminal enterprises, such as the sale of drugs, bank robberies, kidnapping etc., etc.
It is time the police took this law seriously, carry out spot checks and have these vehicles banned from the roads until they comply with the law.
