Sunset’s Sixes raised the bar

The annual Sunset Sixes tournament took place last weekend on a hot and humid day at Cayman International School, Camana Bay.

Sunset Football Club’s event raised funds for the developing youth programmes which provide football for kids from the age of four up to the men’s team.

Sixteen teams started in the tournament which began with the group stage, before the top teams in the groups entered the Sunset Cup and the bottom teams the Plate Cup as a knockout phase commenced.

After many epic group and knockout games, RBC, PWC, Academy Sports Club, Chinny’s Allstars, Maples, RSM Cayman Gerry Hatricks, UBS and Doghouse Devils were all knocked out before the semi-final stages.

All was not lost though, as they made use of the spare time at the Caybrew and PD’s barbeque tents which were providing the beer and food refreshments during the day.

In the Plate semis, a Chis Turrell led CML Claymore and Matt Colerig’s Andro Group came up agonisingly short. Andro were the unfortunate victims of a cruel penalty shoot-out defeat, with an inspirational Neil Gray proving too much of an obstacle in the Security Centre goal.

The Sunset Cup semis also provided the excitement of penalties, with Sandlot – the defending champions led by Tom Elliott, Justin Pierre and Richie Addison – the disappointed team as Citco booked their place in the final.

The Italian flair of the Agua team were also knocked out in the other semi-final, George Town Rum Runners proving too strong.

The Plate final proved a one-sided affair, EFG United, a team led magnificently by Gal Anziska all day, could not replicate the form in the final – with Chris Douglas and Dan Bryer amongst the goals as the Security Centre took the trophy.

After the game, the winning captain, Paul Valenti, revealed his pearls of wisdom, taken from iconic Scottish manager Walter Smith to his team before the final: “Do your talking on the pitch lads.”

The Sunset Cup final was won by Jon Pump’s Citco team who had improved steadily during the day. They beat a Rum Runners team packed with the experience of Junior Fisher, Lee Ramoon and Garth Anderson in an entertaining final. The youthful Citco team will be the target side to overcome next year.

Sunset thanked all players and supporters for attending their fifth annual Sunset Sixes and gave a special thanks to Dukes Bar and Restaurant who provided gift certificates for all the participants on the day.
