Little Cayman takes centre stage

You know Pirates Week is about to kick off when Little Cayman gets involved.

The Sister Island’s own Pirates Week celebration takes place on Friday, 2 and Saturday, 3 November and features some of the regular favourites and some surprises, too.

Things get under way in earnest on Friday, with the kickoff dance at the Hungry Iguana from 8pm. As is customary, there will be prizes, contests and giveaways. Music comes courtesy of the band Heat and Xcitement Dancers bring exciting dancing to the party. Will Las Tortugas Pirates turn up? There is only one way to find out.

Float parade

Saturday, 3 November brings the always inventive and colourful Float Parade, which starts at 3pm at Head O Bay. The theme of Pirates Week 2012 is Historic Shipwrecks and Cayman Treasures, so the costumes look set to be intricate, inspired and generally excellent. There are plenty of prizes here, also, namely first, second and third best float plus a children’s division; best-dressed pirate; best-dressed wench; best-dressed child pirate (female) and best-dressed child pirate (male). There’s also more performances by Xcitement Dancers to keep
things rolling along.

At 8pm, all will decamp to Hungry Iguana again for the fireworks and then the celebratory dance, which is scheduled to begin at 8.30pm. Performances by Heat and the ubiquitous dancers will keep things rolling on and more contests, prizes and
giveaways are promised.

With local food and treats on sale from midday onward, the Little Cayman Pirates Week celebration is set to be an excellent way to lay down a marker for the revelry to come throughout the Cayman Islands. Organisers said that all are welcome to participate in any and all of the events, so please contact them to find out how.

Bernie Bush of the Pirates Week Committee said that Little Cayman has a flavour all its own and is always a must-visit
for Pirates Week.

“I admire them for their ingenuity – all of the floats are really and truly home made. It’s things they have found on the beach, moving parts, the kids really enjoy themselves.

“I am really pleased to see all the hotels are full and that Pirates Week is doing its job in getting people to the Sister Islands to see how beautiful they are.”
