Participants in the Intertrust Cayman Islands Marathon will have one last opportunity to be motivated and inspired just hours before they take to the streets.
Fitness expert Tracie Smith-Beyak and ultra-distance runner Paul Staso will be speaking during Packet Pickup on Saturday 1 December at the Marriott Beach Resort, giving runners last-minute tips, encouragement and advice and talking about their own experiences as distance runners.
The sessions are open to all registered runners. Staso will speak at 10.30am and 12.30pm while Smith-Beyak will present at 11.30am and 1.30pm.
Smith-Beyak owns BN Athletic Training and Body Now 4 Mums & Kids which has branches in Canada and Grand Cayman.
She has over 20 years of experience in fitness, sports, health and wellness and is a global fitness columnist, author, international presenter, PFS Protrainer and award winning entrepreneur.
Athletic clientele are one of her specialities and she works closely with doctors, physiotherapists, athletic therapists, pedorthists and caregivers to stay on the cutting edge.
Smith-Beyak’s presentation is called “A Coach’s Perspective: Pre & Post-Race Essentials”.
“My team and I will be discussing the ‘dos and don’ts’ leading up to and immediately after competing in an endurance road race,” she said. “Topics such as nutrition, tapering, stretching and hydration will be covered and I’ll also be answering runners’ questions.”
Smith-Beyak and her team at BN Athletic Training will host a stretch tent on race day to help runners before and after their run. This service was very useful to many runners last year.
Staso is founder and president of the Promoting Active Children Everywhere Fitness Foundation and has run solo across states and countries averaging 30 miles per day, bringing with him thousands of school children worldwide as they virtually run and walk his course while learning about health, fitness, goal setting and other places beyond their school fields.
Some of his achievements include running 3,260 miles solo coast-to-coast across the entire United States in 2006, running 500 miles solo through Alaska in 2009, running 500 miles solo across Germany in 2010 and running 506 miles solo across the Mojave Desert in 2011, making him the first person to run alone from the Grand Canyon to Death Valley.
He does all of this while pushing an 80-pound specialised ‘stroller’ filled with gear, food, water and electronics.
Staso’s presentation is “Paul’s Run Across America – The Man Who Ran More Than a Marathon Every Day for 108 Days”. He will talk about the mental edge of conquering the marathon distance, pacing, hydration during the race and techniques for relaxing during a marathon.
He will also provide mental strategies for getting through 26.2 miles on Sunday 2 December with strength and focus.
“We really hope that our runners will take advantage of the opportunity to hear these amazing athletes speak,” said Rhonda Kelly, race director for the Intertrust Cayman Islands Marathon.
“Tracie and Paul both have a wealth of knowledge about fitness and running, along with very unique and inspiring stories to tell. I believe that everyone can benefit from the information they are going to share, and that it will help them before, during and after the race.”
