Santi tees up top pros again

Cayman residents will be rubbing shoulders with some of the world’s top professionals during this year’s Cayman Islands Golf Invitational at the North Sound Golf Club.

The Cayman Islands Golf Invitational runs for two days, from 7-8 December, with tee off times at 1pm and 9am respectively.

The tournament, which would not be possible without the support of various local businesses, allows men who usually spend most of their time in the boardroom, a chance to play beside professionals they only ever see on TV. Players of the calibre of Paul Hanson and Brian Davis will compete.

Former golfer Marcello Santi, who has shared many rounds with each of the sponsors, decided three years ago to organise a tournament here to give locals the opportunity to improve their game through playing alongside world class pros.

Santi said: “It is very hard to make a change in your golf swing when you have reached a certain age in your life. These changes must be made early on, but it is not as difficult to improve your putting skills.

“I believe that 80 per cent of the game is on the putting green so if you improve your putting skill you will improve your game.

“We professionals have a saying on the golf course, ‘drive for show, putt for money’, which is something even amateurs should keep in the back of their minds when playing.”

Santi also hopes that the sponsors will learn how to produce more playable shots and become more consistent in their game.

“More efficient shots will get them in the best position for the next shot and ultimately improve their game.”

Santi added: “I would like to thank all the tournament’s loyal supporters and welcome on board all the new sponsors.

“The tournament which is open to the public free of charge will provide spectators with a level of golf rarely seen on Island.”
