CIBC girls batter up

Softball girls in Cayman are ready to swing for the fences.

The girls softball division of the Cayman Islands Little League has been training since 30 January and will begin a brand new season of games on Saturday, 2 March, at Field of Dreams.

At 4.30pm, CIBC face Al La Kebab on field one, while Island Cleaners take on GCM on field two.

Four teams of girls (ages 11-17) will compete in the league this season, thanks to sponsors Green Light Re-Insurance Ltd, Al La Kebab, Island Cleaners and GCM. Each team has 12 girls and three volunteer coaches.

Games will take place on Wednesdays from 6.30 to 8pm and Saturdays from 4.30 to 6pm through 1 June. Players must arrive 30 minutes before their game starts to check in and warm up.

The public are encouraged to come out and cheer. The concession stand will be open during games, serving hamburgers, hotdogs, chicken tenders, snacks and drinks.

The girls, along with all other Little League players, are selling discount cards for $5. The cards are good until the end of December and feature savings at several local businesses. The youngsters will also begin selling tickets for the annual fundraising raffle in a few more weeks.

News of girls softball comes as the Cayman Islands Little League Association stages its corporate softball league at Field of Dreams. Titled the 2013 Winter Adult Coed Softball League, the competition is in its sixth week of play.
