Jets fly by Senators

The Jets remain unbeaten in youth hockey.

The squad is now 5-0 in the Squirts 13-Under segment of the 2013 national youth roller hockey league. Their latest victory was a 9-8 win over the KPMG Senators last Saturday.

Jack Lewis had six goals for the winners, while Alex Agemian countered with four goals and two assists. Ethan Finlason notched a goal for the Jets to take his season tally to 16 scores.

The other Squirts’ contest saw the Maples Leaf beat the Penguins, 11-6. Lex Dobson had five goals for Maples, while Jacob Walters scored four times for the Penguins.

Kings official Andre Morgan said both matches came down to offensive explosions.

“The Jets-Senators game was a close game all the way to the end,” Morgan said. “Both teams played hard and strong, never giving up. The Maples-Penguins game saw Maples securing the win with noticeable overall stats. Every player on this team saw good action and playing time on the ice.”

In the Mites 10-Under category, the Bruins stayed in first place by improving to 4-1 with a 6-3 win over the Ernst and Young Eagles. Brad Lansdell scored all six goals for his team while Justin Hastings, Nathan Hughes and Sadie Finch chipped in for the Eagles.

Ecay Traders, 2-3, continued their slide with a 6-3 loss to the PwC Jets. Ethan Finlason paced the Jets with four goals, while Ecay countered with two goals from Jabari Waldron, who now has a league-best 24 scores.

Morgan said the tide is turning in the Mites division.

“PwC received their first win of the season,” he said. “This game was a competitive game, first goal being scored by the Traders. PwC took the lead shortly thereafter, end of story.

“As hard as Ernst and Young tried, they could not lock down the Bruin’s star forward Brad. This led to the Eagles losing the game.”

The Lightning fell from the unbeaten ranks in the Atoms 8-Under division with a 13-1 thrashing at the hands of the Mourant Marksmen. Cameron Smith and Will Dyer crushed the defence with seven goals and six assists combined. Connor Finch pulled one back for the losing squad.

From there, the Deloitte Hurricanes and the Dart Ducks skated to a 9-9 tie. Molly Kehoe produced seven goals and one assist for Deloitte, while Dart countered with nine goals from Jake Booker.

Morgan said the Lightning were hurt by missing players.

“This game we saw the Marksmen coming out with wheels oiled and a skate hard attitude,” he said. “They played against a Lightning team who had two of their most resilient players missing and the Marksmen got the win.

“Deloitte and Dart had a great match up,” he added. “We saw the top players of both teams digging their skates really hard, resulting in a high scoring game that led to a draw.”

League matches continue Saturday, 2 March, at Kings from 8am until 4pm, encompassing the three main age divisions.
