Harney Westwood & Riegels has appointed Travis Ritch – who has joined the firm’s Cayman office – as an articled clerk.

Marco Martins, managing partner of Harneys Cayman, said it was an important achievement for the firm as it is committed to developing a comprehensive and high quality programme aimed at furthering the professional growth of Caymanians and strengthening the firm’s roots in the Cayman Islands.

Harneys’ 18-month articled clerk programme provides comprehensive practical training to Caymanian graduates, where by the clerks work alongside partners and senior associates to gain both advanced technical knowledge of the law and valuable practical experience across all practice areas.

Clerks have an opportunity to work on client matters under the supervision of experienced senior lawyers, and are expected to learn critical skills, including developing and maintaining client relationships and learning about the expectations and demands of global clients. Clerks also participate in in-house training workshops, through which they can refine and develop their professional skills. Harneys has had a similar training programme for newly qualified lawyers in the British Virgin Islands for more than 10 years.

Mr. Martins said Mr. Ritch is an outstanding addition to Harneys.

“Travis has an impressive academic background and is well spoken, responsive, commercially attuned, intelligent, exacting and pleasant—the basic attributes required for the development of an outstanding lawyer,” Mr. Martins said.

Mr. Ritch said he was pleased to join Harneys as its first Cayman articled clerk.

“Everyone has been very welcoming and the training has been excellent so far. I look forward to making the most of my articles with Harneys in the coming months and years,” he said.

Mr. Ritch is a graduate of King’s College in London and was called to the Bar of England and Wales in July 2011. He received several academic and extracurricular awards throughout his education. He is a member of the Inner Temple, the King’s College London Bar Society, an honorary member of the Caymanian Bar Association and an associate member of the Cayman Islands branch of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.
