HSBC run past Kirk boys

Little League baseball is swinging into action in 2013.

The Field of Dreams facility in George Town sees the Pony and AA (for ages 11-12) divisions in action under the guidance of the Cayman Islands Little League Association.

In the Pony segment, HSBC clipped Kirk Freeport 7-6 in a very close game. HSBC came out on top thanks to good defensive plays from Jaeden Pouchie at pitcher and Alejandro Holness at first base. Lola Powery, who made a good stop in the outfield to prevent a home run, also had two hits in the game, scored the winning run off a Samuel Harding hit and was named player of the match.

Deloitte would beat Final Touch 10-8 in AA action. The Deloitte Diamond Cutters were the home team and things started a little shaky with the first two batters of the Final Touch gang getting on base and Pierce Serrant knocked them home with a two-run single. Deloitte starting pitcher Jude Reynolds settled down and sat down the next three batters in order with three strikeouts.

In the bottom half of the inning, Deloitte got a leadoff single by Lex but was forced out at second on a fielder’s choice thanks to the slick fielding of Marcos Bertran. Everton laced a double to centre field, driving home two runs. He later scored on a two-out single by captain contact Jack McGregor.

From there, Final Touch would enjoy good pitching from ‘Hey Jude’ Reynolds and more sound hitting from Serrant. The Diamond Cutters responded with big hits from ‘Mad Max’ Hydes, Lauren Brown and Mikey Harris, with Hydes doing solid relief pitching and Sean Lansdell and Harris producing stellar defensive plays.

Other league action saw Logic beat HSBC 9-8. It was the first win for Logic in the Pony ranks against previously undefeated HSBC. Samuel Harding was the star for HSBC with a home run, double and four Runs Batted In.

Conyers Dill Pearman had a strong team effort with a 14-5 Pony win over Coldwell Banker last Saturday. Led by homers from sluggers Jonathan Rado and Luis Clarke, the Conyers offence soared and saw more homers from Mateo Cavallaro, Immanuel Duran and Toby Johns.

Conyers also got good fielding by the likes of Dylan Atkinson, Johns, Aiden McCallister, Luke Novak, Jadon Jimenez, Lucas Jimenez and Demae Lee.

Kirk Freeport crushed Appleby 11-5 last Saturday in an exciting game. Jayquan Pinet had a grand slam for Kirk Freeport with great defensive plays coming from Louie Chung, Michael Smith and Charles Gilman.

Trey Josephs and Gerson Henriquez starred on defence for Appleby with quite a few hits coming from Jayden Miller, Nathan Morgan and Erick Fredrick.

The latest Pony standings see Conyers on top at 4-0, followed by 2-1-1 HSBC, 2-2 Kirk Freeport, 1-2-1 Appleby, 1-3 Coldwell Banker and 1-3 team Logic.
