Fishing lovers are set to have most of their attention on Cayman Brac.
The annual Cayman Brac Jackpot fishing tournament takes place across the Cayman Islands from 17 to 19 May. The Carib Sands dock in Cayman Brac and the Barcadere Marina in Grand Cayman will serve as weigh stations each day from roughly 4.30 until 6pm.
More than US$10,000 in prizes is on offer, with some of the biggest rewards available for those who fish in the Sister Islands. The heaviest eligible fish caught in Cayman Brac or Little Cayman earns US$4,000 with $1,500 on offer as the Lawford Tatum Memorial prize for the heaviest dolphin.
A number of other prizes can be claimed by those fishing around Grand Cayman. The grand slam category sees first place earning US$1,000 and second place taking US$500.
The heaviest wahoo, yellowfin tuna and dolphin each earn US$1,500 with the second and third biggest of each species earning US$750 and US$500, respectively. The top lady and junior angler each take home US$500.
Registration takes place on Thursday, 16 May, at 6 to 7.30pm at Captain’s Table in Cayman Brac and at the George Town Yacht Club in Grand Cayman. The awards ceremony takes place on Sunday, 19 May, at 7.30pm at The Alexander Hotel in the Brac.
News of the Jackpot comes after the year’s biggest competition, the 2013 Cayman Islands International Fishing Tournament. Al Parsons had the biggest fish in a 73.3-pound tuna.
