Local racers will be looking to unseat Roje Williams from pole position.
Williams, 27, has much of the bragging rights heading into the fourth meet of the Cayman Motorsports Association 2013 Time Attack season. The Progressive Loop on Sparky’s Drive in George Town will serve as host for night-time racing from 6pm on Saturday, 25 May.
The motorsports veteran, who was among the top finishers at last month’s race, states regardless of his form in future races, he will not be a serious threat for the series championship.
“I’ll make some appearances but I won’t participate in every event,” Williams said. “I’m out to keep the interest going for me. I won’t be a contender for the title this year but I’ll be participating.
“To me, the competition is the same as in years past. It’s a very good programme for drivers to develop their skills. I wouldn’t call myself a veteran, though most people say I am, and it’s good to interact with guys and give tips and tricks. It’s all about developing skills and getting better.”
Williams, who competed last season in a Nissan Silvia, dominated April’s autocross race in the Flower Power Toyota Starlet EP82. He won the Unlimited Division in 63.108 seconds, the fastest mark during the group stages, before finishing second in the Unlimited Battle segment.
Williams beat out a field of seven other drivers, including runner up Bobby Hulse, the association president, who ran his Toyota Altezza SXE10 in 64.093 seconds. Michael Weatherford ran his yellow Subaru Impreza GC8 to third place in 64.549 seconds.
Craig Burke maintained his billing as a top driver in the Street Class with his white Subaru Impreza GC8. Burke was second in the group at 66.454 seconds, behind Reynaldo Powery’s Nissan Primera P11 and its time of 65.337 seconds, before besting Powery in the Battle run. Nikko Miller placed third in 69.972 seconds, driving a Mitsubishi Mirage.
In all, 16 racers competed last month. Among the notable racers were Richard Crawshaw in a Porsche Carrera 4S, Drew Conolly in a Honda Civic Type R EK9 and relative newcomer Angel Dixon in the Automotive Art/Paul Bodden Heavy Equipment Mitsubishi Mirage.
The 2013 Time Attack season has five meets left with the next race slated for 23 June.
