Update: The missing fisherman who is now the subject of a police marine search was identified Tuesday as 63-year-old Mark Clarke of George Town.
Police said Mr. Clarke planned to fish in the Rum Point area Monday after he left around 7 a.m. in his sailboat “Badger.”
Initial story: The Joint Marine Unit and the police helicopter were searching off Cayman Kai Tuesday after an unmanned sailboat was found lodged on the reef.
About 10 a.m. Tuesday, police received a report that the 25-foot sailboat was lodged on the reef just east of the Cayman Kai channel at the northern end of Grand Cayman’s North Sound.
The Marine Unit found that no one on board.
The Marine Unit, assisted by a private vessel, removed the boat from the reef and the craft was towed to the Joint Marine base in Newlands.
The boat owner’s friends and family confirmed that he left from Rackley’s Canal in North Sound to go fishing Monday morning around 7 a.m. He has not been in contact with them since, police said.
An air and sea search was under way involving the Marine Unit, Department of Environment and the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service Air Operations Unit.
