Missing man may be escapee

A man who was initially considered to have been “lost at sea” may have resurfaced in Jamaica after slipping through the hands of local law enforcement.

Anthony Smith, 33, was last seen diving into the sea near West Bay Public Beach on Oct. 1.

“The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service has received credible information that Mr. Smith is off island and has been in Jamaica since two days after he was first reported missing,” according to a statement issued by police Wednesday. “This information is being followed up on.”

A rescue effort on land, air and sea  in early October found Mr. Smith’s shoes and a cell phone, but which failed to locate him.

The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service said Mr. Smith was the subject of a warrant for failing to appear in court and was wanted on suspicion of drug offenses. Police were chasing him when he dove into the sea just before 10 p.m. on Oct. 1.
